Auto Mechanic/Bus Driver 

  • Qualifications: Two years experience as a skilled automotive repairman or any equivalent combination of experience and training. 
  • Salary: $49,734 – $57,643, actual salary based on education and experience pursuant to the wage schedule posted on the district’s website

AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC-BUS DRIVER

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Makes skilled repairs and adjustments to automotive
equipment and machinery and operates a school bus on an assigned route; does related work as
required.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is skilled work involving responsibility
for the complete overhaul and repair of a variety of automotive equipment. The work involves a
thorough knowledge of the trade. General instructions are received regarding tasks to be
performed, but considerable leeway is permitted in planning the details of each assignment.
EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)
Performs skilled operations in the repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel motor equipment,
including trucks, tractors and buses;
Repairs or replaces motor pumps, fuel pumps, generators, carburetors, shock absorbers;
Repairs ignition systems, transmissions, brake systems, clutches,
front and rear axles;
Adjusts connecting rods and bearings;
Makes minor welding repairs to automotive equipment;
Greases vehicles, changes oil and oil filters;
Tunes engine and sets the timing;
Attaches and removes snow plow blades and other auxiliary equipment;
Operates a school bus on an assigned route.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Thorough knowledge of standard
automotive repair methods and the terminology and tools of the trade; demonstrated ability to
make difficult repairs to heavy automotive and other mechanical equipment; familiarity with
welding techniques; ability to work from plans and specifications and to follow rough draft
sketches and oral instructions; good motor and hand and eye coordination; good physical
condition.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Two years experience as a skilled automotive
repairman or any equivalent combination of experience and training.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: (1) Possession of appropriate level New York State Driver's
License; (2) Drivers must be at least 21 years of age and (3) candidates must satisfy the
requirements for School Bus Driver set forth in the Rules and Regulations of the New York State
Commissioner of Education.
NOTE: Districts that experience difficulty in recruiting fully qualifies drivers, (i.e., individuals
with the CDL), may hire individuals with a CDL learner’s permit and establish a formal, in-house
training program geared toward preparing these drivers to take and pass the road test to obtain the
appropriate license. The training program must be successfully completed within 6 months and
the appropriate license obtained before the individual drives a school bus with students or is
assigned a regular bus route.
